From Theory to Practice: Making Co-Teaching Actually Work
Two credentialed teachers, one room, and very little guidance on how they are meant to share it. The field has largely settled on naming the six models and telling pairs to co-plan weekly during common planning time. That advice assumes a master schedule with overlapping prep, and most schedules are built under constraints nobody chose.
This keynote is about what a pair can do inside the schedule they already have, and why ten minutes with the right question beats an hour without one. It is built to change how a room thinks about the work, not to send everyone home with a checklist.
We have been stuck in one teach, one assist for years
For the teachers in the room
One teach, one assist is a fine place to start and a hard place to leave. Graduating out of it happens in small steps rather than one big change, and most pairs can start making those changes the next day.
How long should this actually take?
For the leaders in the room
The full range of models is often expected right out of the gate. It can happen inside a first year, and sometimes does, but usually only after a pair has had planning time and enough time together to build trust. This part is about where to set the expectation, and what coaching and support will move a pair toward it.
